The exhibition consists of 39 paintings-showcases containing the 39 nadales of the Jaume I Foundation (1968-2004) with a series of explanatory panels and an area where visitors can consult the different nadales.

We are presenting this exhibition dedicated to the publication of the Nadala of the Lluís Carulla Foundation to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Lluís Carulla i Canals. The Jaume I Foundation has published this unique Christmas greeting every year since 1968. The Nadala is based on the commemoration of an historical event or literary happening and the collection now covers almost every aspect of Catalan culture.

The traditional Catalan Nadal contains popular musical compositions full of tenderness and feeling, such as El desembre congelat, Les dotze van tocant, Fum, fum, fum, El rabadà, La pastora Caterina, or the subtle Què li darem an el noi de la mare? composed by Jacint Verdaguer. Another indispensable piece of the collection is the simple melodic tune of El dimoni escuat.

Some nadales or Christmas songs from other countries have also become popular in Catalonia and these include Silent Night and White Christmas.

El Cant dels ocells, composed by an unknown author, became famous around the world after the Catalan cellist Pau Casals played this poignant melody at the residence of the President of the United States John F. Kennedy and at the headquarters of the United Nations.

On the other hand, the artistic or Christmas card, a custom that initially came from North America and Central Europe, has become popular in Catalonia to the point that it has become the standard method of greeting at Christmas. In the past, the service guilds took advantage of the Christmas holidays, which tended to give rise to a spirit of bonhomie, to make a gift or Christmas greeting (also known as a aguinaldo), through the typical Christmas card.

The Nadala of the Lluís Carulla Foundation is a monographic publication and its purpose is to increase an awareness of the history, culture and language of Catalonia, as well as the myths and traditions of the Catalans.

The idea for the collection came from Mr Lluís Carulla i Canals, who transformed the traditional Christmas greeting card into an efficient educational tool that could also be used to spread cultural ideas and which he placed at the service of the country during the hard and dark days of the Franco dictatorship.

The first people to receive this initiative of Mr Carulla were his friends and the members of the Òmnium Cultural an association for the promotion of Catalan culture which he had helped found and build.
