The Lluís Carulla Foundation grew out of the roots of the enterprising initiative of Lluís Carulla Canals, during the period when the repression of the Franco regime imposed a long public silence on Catalan language and culture. It was necessary to defend and promote the use of the language and culture in order to maintain our national identity alive.

The Lluís Carulla Foundation has carried out important and continuous cultural and educational work and this has had positive social repercussions which have received institutional and social recognition at the highest level. All these efforts are reflected for example, in the books published by the Barcino Publishers, our Nadales (Christmas greetings)and the successive editions of the Baldiri Reixac Awards, the Lluís Carulla Honour Awards and the Civic Action Awards.

Even though 25 years have gone by since the approval of the Catalan Statute of Autonomy, Catalan language and Catalan culture still face significant difficulties in order to operate with total normality and the work of the Lluís Carulla Foundation continues to play a fundamental and relevant role.

“To unselfishly Promote, either alone or through third parties, any activity relating to Catalan culture, especially the Catalan language and its social use, as well as scientific research; and the investigation, conservation, exhibition and study of our artistic, scientific, historical, ethnologic heritage, etc. through the creation and maintenance of museums, collections and the like; the publishing and dissemination of journals, books and magazines, and the promotion of artistic and cultural performances of any type, especially those relating to education, the theatre or cinema, carried out either directly or else through the radio, recordings or television, or any other means, provided that, in the opinion of the Board of Trustees, they are worthy of such help.” (article 3 of the Statutes of the Foundation)

“To strengthen the language and culture of the Països Catalans as essential instruments for the cohesion and identification of the national community, in order to strengthen the sense of belonging”. (meeting of the Board of Trustees, 22 April 2003).
From now on, the Foundation intends to focus its actions fundamentally on the language, the written culture and the values that make up Catalan society.
The Foundation wishes to work in order to strengthen the conscience of an identity within Catalan society which is the result of roots and a thousand year history which have been shaping the heritage that we have inherited and which, as part of our compromise with the future, we are obliged to improve in order to hand it down as a living reality to the future generations.
